I was putting on overly clumpy mascara the other day and trying to think back as to when I last purchased it. I knew if I couldn’t remember, it was likely quite a while ago! After some further research on how long makeup lasts, I learned that I basically needed to toss most of my makeup due to it being (majorly) expired! Your makeup and cosmetics, when expired, can trap bacteria and cause irritations, infections, breakouts and styes.
How Long Does Makeup Last
Some makeup will have expiration dates directly on the packaging, which start from the time you use it. However, if you can’t find an expiration date (or no longer have the packaging), follow the guidelines below to determine how long your makeup will last.
Eyeliner (gel): 6 – 8 months
Eyeliner (pencil): 1 year
Mascara: 3 – 6 months
Powder cosmetics (blush, eye shadow, bronzer, etc…): 1 – 2 years
Foundation (pump): 1 – 2 years
Foundation (pot): 6 months
Cream Blush: 1 – 1.5 years
Lipstick: 1 – 2 years
Nail polish: 1 – 2 years
Perfume: 8 years
